Level 2 & Level 4 Retrofit Course Syllabus | Ozone Group

Explore the modules, learning outcomes and portfolio activities included within the Level 2 Certificate in Retrofit and the Level 4 Certificate in Retrofit Assessment.

This syllabus applies to all relevant Ozone Group delivery options, including live online training, classroom training and guided online learning.

Both qualifications develop an understanding of domestic retrofit, energy efficiency and the principles of PAS 2035. The Level 2 qualification provides an introduction to retrofit projects and professional practices, while the Level 4 qualification develops the practical skills required to carry out retrofit assessments using property case studies and industry assessment software.

The Level 2 and Level 4 retrofit qualifications provide learners with an understanding of how existing homes can be assessed and improved through a structured, whole-dwelling retrofit process.

Learners study PAS 2035, building physics, heat loss, ventilation, moisture, building condition, occupancy and the responsibilities of professionals working within the domestic retrofit industry. PAS 2035:2023 covers the assessment, design, installation, handover, advice, monitoring and evaluation stages associated with improving the energy efficiency of existing homes.

The whole-dwelling approach considers the property, its construction, condition, ventilation, occupants and intended outcomes before energy-efficiency measures are recommended. This reduces the risk of measures being installed in isolation and causing unintended problems such as condensation, mould, overheating or damage to the building fabric.

Modules in the course

The following subjects are included within the Level 2 and Level 4 retrofit training. The Level 4 course develops these topics further through software demonstrations, practical assessment training and case studies.

  • Introduction to Retrofit and PAS 2035
  • The Whole-House Retrofit Process
  • Retrofit Roles and Professional Responsibilities
  • Retrofit Risk Assessment and Project Pathways
  • Building Physics and Heat Loss
  • Thermal Bridging, U-Values and Insulation
  • Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality
  • Moisture, Condensation and Damp
  • Historic and Traditional Buildings
  • Energy Reports and Property Evidence - Level 4
  • Retrofit Condition Reports – Level 4
  • Occupancy Assessments – Level 4
  • Retrofit Advice, TrustMark and Accreditation – Level 4
  • Practical Retrofit Assessment and Software Training – Level 4

The Level 2 and Level 4 Retrofit qualifications are structured into a series of modules that gradually build your knowledge of domestic retrofit, energy efficiency and PAS 2035. You'll develop an understanding of building physics, heat loss, moisture management, ventilation, whole-house retrofit principles, professional roles and industry standards before progressing to property assessment and evidence collection.

Regardless of the delivery method you choose—live online, classroom or guided online—you'll study the same core syllabus and receive the knowledge required to understand how retrofit projects are assessed, planned and delivered in accordance with current industry best practice.

Portfolio & Assessments

To successfully achieve the Level 3 & Level 4 Commercial Energy Assessor (Non-Domestic Energy Assessor – NDEA) qualification, you'll complete a portfolio of practical work together with professional assignments that demonstrate your competence in carrying out Commercial Energy Performance Certificate assessments.

The portfolio has been designed to develop both your technical knowledge and your practical surveying skills, ensuring you're fully prepared to work as a qualified Commercial Energy Assessor.

The portfolio includes:

  • Preparing to Carry Out a Retrofit Upgrade
  • Organising the Requirements of a Retrofit Upgrade
  • Retrofit Roles, Responsibilities and Competence
  • How Retrofit Roles Support Successful Project Outcomes
  • Carrying Out a Retrofit Project
  • Retrofit Pathways and Standards Evaluation
  • Case Study - Level 4

Level 2 Certificate in Retrofit focuses on developing your understanding of domestic retrofit, PAS 2035, professional responsibilities and the principles that underpin successful retrofit projects. The qualification is knowledge-based and provides the foundation required to understand the retrofit process and the roles involved.

Level 4 Certificate in Retrofit Assessment builds upon the Level 2 syllabus by introducing practical retrofit assessment skills. In addition to completing the written portfolio, learners receive hands-on training using industry-standard retrofit assessment software and complete practical property case studies. This includes gathering property data, producing floor plans, completing Energy Reports, Occupancy Assessments and Condition Reports, recording photographic evidence, and preparing assessment information for submission to a Retrofit Coordinator.

Throughout both qualifications, your dedicated tutor will provide guidance and detailed feedback on every submission. Where improvements are required, you'll have the opportunity to revise and resubmit your work, ensuring you develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to successfully complete your qualification.
